In honour of World Water Day, (Friday, March 22nd), this blog post will be the second of a four-part charity partner spotlight series.
UNESCO predicts that 1.8 billion people will be experiencing water scarcity and half of the world will be living in water stressed conditions by 2025. Climate change, population growth, agricultural demands, and mismanagement of water resources all contribute to the growing global water crisis.
For our second charitable partner spotlight of the week we want to introduce you to another one of Cupanion’s amazing charitable partners: Water.org – a non-profit development aid organization that has positively transformed lives around the world with access to safe water and sanitation through affordable financing.
Founded by Matt Damon (yes, that Matt Damon!) and Gary White, they have been introducing market-driven financial solutions to the global water crisis for more than 25 years, giving women hope, children health and communities a future.
The founders say their approach isn’t just charity, but a sustainable solution. That’s why they operate under a pay-it-forward system that allows the organization to help more people in more lasting ways, offering programs like WaterCredit.
Water.org’s microfinance-based WaterCredit Initiative is a market-oriented solution that provides people in need with small loans to address their water and sanitation needs. As the loans are repaid, the capital is recycled, allowing WaterCredit to reach more people than a traditional grant.
According to Water.org, about half of those in need of regular access to safe water could use the existing water infrastructure in their communities, but financial barriers have prevented that. With microfinancing through their WaterCredit program, Water.org has helped millions of people around the world to bring safe water and sanitation into their homes with small, affordable loans.
The change they’ve been able to bring about so far is amazing. They’ve helped more than 17 million people benefit from access to safe water and sanitation through affordable financing across 12 countries. Over 3.7 million microloans have been disbursed through WaterCredit. In addition to microloans, Water.org also provides charitable donations, invests to support more microfinancing for long-term water solutions, and partners with other experts and organizations working to end the water crisis around the world.
Water.org is driving the water sector for new solutions, new financing models and greater transparency and we here at Cupanion are proud to help them create lasting change with our Fill it Forward Initative.
Ready to be part of the solution? Every time you refill and scan your Fill it Forward tag between March 22nd and 29th 2019, Cupanion will “double up” and give two cups of clean water to people in need.
