Seasons greetings everyone!
December is upon us once again and preparing for a joyous holiday season can leave mountains of waste destined for our landfills. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day Americans toss out 25 percent more waste than during the rest of the year.
But with a little bit of planning, we can add a dash more sustainability to the season without having to sacrifice any of the holiday cheer.
Here are a few tips to help reduce your waste this holiday season:
1. Opt for a real tree and compost it when finished
If possible, choose a potted tree. A smaller, potted tree can be just as festive as a cut tree. Plus, you can plant it or donate it to a local tree-planting group after the holidays! If you can’t find a potted tree buy a real tree and compost it when finished.
2. Choose earth-friendly holiday greetings
Each year, an estimated 2.6 billion holiday cards are sold in the US, or enough to fill a football field 10 stories high! Instead, when putting together your holiday list, try choosing greeting cards that are made of recycled paper. If you avoid cards with shiny coatings or with glossy covers, a lot of waste can be recycled. And if you really want to reduce waste, consider sending e-greeting cards out!
3. Bring out the China
We know dishes are annoying, but so is the additional party waste in landfills and oceans.
Have fun to styling your table and opt for washable dishware, and reusable napkins.
4. Use reusable gift wrap
It is mind-blowing that we spend so much time and money on gift wrapping that is only appreciated for a brief moment. Instead, try reusable or fabric gift wrap. Bonus: Reusable gift wrap makes it especially convenient to wrap oddly shaped items. And with no need for measuring, cutting, folding, or taping, it saves as much time as it does waste.
5. Encourage waste reduction
Have a special someone in your life that generates a ton of waste? Why not encourage sustainability with some neat items: beeswax food wrappers, bamboo toothbrushes, stainless steel straws and of course a few of our Cupanion bottles and cups!
