As business owners ourselves, we understand that you are always looking for ways to save your company money. Unfortunately, many businesses believe that introducing green initiatives into their organization will lead to an increase in operating costs. What they don’t realize though, is that even small green changes within their organization can actually lead to major cost savings.
One of the easiest ways that businesses can reap the benefits of introducing green initiatives into their daily operations is by making the switch from disposable cups to reusable cups. The average North American office worker uses approximately 500 disposable cups every year.
Assuming the each cup will cost about $0.15, that is a total of $75 a year spent on disposable cups. And that is only for one employee! Even if you have an office of only 15 people, that’s still $1,125 a year you are spending on disposable cups. If we had to guess, there are plenty of other things that your business would rather being doing with that money.
Not only do disposable cups add an unnecessary expense to your business, their production has a significant impact on their environment. A study conducted by Starbucks and the Alliance for the Environmental Innovation found that each paper cup that is manufactured is responsible for 0.24 lbs of CO2 emissions. This number may seem pretty small, but when you think about the number of disposable cups the average North American goes through each year, it equals 120 lbs of emissions per person. Again, even if your workplace only has 15 employees, that’s an additional 1,800 lbs of CO2 emissions released each year.
If these numbers weren’t shocking enough, consider this last one. Each year, 53,000 homes could be powered by the energy that is used to make and disposable of paper cups. That is the size of a small city!
